How bilingual works at a village school 一所村校的雙語版本

Bilingual education in Taiwan can mean many things — from a single English-immersion class to a whole school where every period is taught in English. KangLang sits at the level that Taichung calls middle-tier (中階雙語): three grade levels, three different subjects, two periods of English-medium instruction per week per grade.

This is not English-as-a-subject — that still happens in regular English class. This is English as the medium through which a real subject is taught. Science is still science. Math is still math. They simply happen to take place, for two periods each week, in a classroom where the teacher and the children speak both languages by turns.

台灣的「雙語教育」可能指很多事——從一節英語沉浸式課程,到整所學校每堂課都用英語授課。槺榔位於台中市分類下的「中階雙語」:三個年級、三個不同的科目、每年級每週兩節英語為授課語言。

這不是「英語當一門課」——那部分仍然發生在原本的英語課裡。這是「英語當成一門真正的學科被教授時所使用的語言」。自然還是自然,數學還是數學,只是每週兩節,在一間師生輪流使用兩種語言的教室裡進行。

Natural Science 自然與生活科技

The first bilingual subject our children meet. Plants, animals, weather, the materials of the world — named in two languages as they are observed.

Integrated Activities 綜合活動

Teamwork, self-management, community participation — the “how to be a human together” subject. Taught bilingually because being together itself benefits from two languages.

Mathematics 數學

Fractions, ratios, geometry — the universal language of math, given a second voice. By sixth grade our students do not flinch when a problem changes language mid-sentence.

Curriculum reflects the academic year recorded in our school plan. Schedules are adjusted yearly by the school's curriculum committee.

Designed to be played over the morning intercom, watched in homeroom, or screened in any school that wants to start bringing English into daily campus life.

Why we share, instead of make our own 為什麼我們是「共用」,而不是各做各的

The two playlists above are not KangLang's. They belong to My Culture Connect (人師教育協會), a Taiwanese non-profit that has been placing English-speaking student teachers in schools and producing bilingual resources for over twenty years.

Many Taiwanese schools recreate the same bilingual video content from scratch — ten different schools, ten slightly different roll-call videos, no one watching beyond their own campus. We chose to embed the same playlists every partner school uses, because:

上面兩個 playlist 並不是槺榔自己的,它們屬於人師教育協會(My Culture Connect)——一個在台灣經營超過二十年的非營利組織,長期為學校媒合英語實習老師,並製作雙語教學資源。

許多台灣學校會各自從零做一樣的雙語影片——十所學校做十支稍微不同的點名影片,但沒有人會看自己校外的版本。我們選擇「每所合作校都嵌同一份 playlist」,原因是:內容本來就是共通的——清水的雙語問候和二林一樣有效;觀看數累積在同一個頻道,製作端才有動力繼續做新的;影片更新時,所有用它的學校自動拿到新版;而且這也讓我們的孩子知道——他們屬於一個比一所村校更大的雙語學習群體。

The bilingual campus that shares its resources is the bilingual campus that lasts. 願意共用資源的雙語校園,才是能走得久的雙語校園。
