A bilingual walking curriculum, designed around our signature outdoor course — the kanglang tree, the broom-makers, the temple, the market, the rice fields, and the coast.
The most common shape of bilingual education in Taiwan is a classroom. Four walls, twenty desks, a whiteboard with two scripts on it. KangLang has all of that — and KangLang also has a kind of bilingual lesson that does not fit between those walls.
“Walking Qingshui” (行腳清水) is the name of our school's signature outdoor curriculum. Several times a year, classes leave the campus and walk through the village — to the kanglang trees the school is named after, to the temple courtyards their great-grandparents swept clean, to the market where the grandmothers still know which vegetable is in season. This page is the bilingual companion to that walk: six stations, six bilingual scripts, six chances for a child to claim their own village in two languages.
A child who can describe their own village in two languages owns it twice.
Each station below is a place the children of KangLang actually visit during “Walking Qingshui.” The English and Chinese phrases are the ones our teachers have begun using on the walks — written here for parents, friends, and curious visitors to follow along.
“This tree gave our village its name — and our school, too. Look at the leaves: thin, tough, almost like fingers. People here used to dry them in the sun and tie them into brooms.”
“The old people in our village still know how to make a kanglang broom by hand. They tie the dried leaves in a special knot at the top — a knot their grandparents taught them, and that they will teach their grandchildren if anyone asks.”
“The temple is the oldest building most of our students will ever stand in front of. It has been swept clean for generations — first by the great-grandmothers, with brooms made from the trees the school is named after, and now by us.”
“Before there were supermarkets, this was where every household in the village did its shopping. The grandmothers behind the stalls still know which vegetable is in season — ask them, and you will get a lesson no textbook can give you.”
“Qingshui means clear water — and clear water is what the rice fields here have always needed. In the spring you can see the seedlings green and small; in summer they grow tall; by autumn the whole plain turns gold.”
“Qingshui sits on the western edge of Taiwan. Walk far enough west of our school and the rice fields stop and the wetlands begin, and beyond the wetlands is the Taiwan Strait. Most of our children have stood here. Almost none of them have been told, in English, what it is they are looking at.”
This page is freely usable by any teacher, in any school, who would like to design a similar bilingual walking course for their own village. The six-station structure works for almost any rural Taiwanese township — swap our kanglang trees and brooms for whatever your village is known for, and the rest of the shape holds.
If you adapt this material for your school, we'd love to hear about it. KangLang and My Culture Connect are both reachable through the contact details on our home page.
