A Letter to the Families of KangLang 給槺榔國小家庭的一封信

Dear families, dear friends of KangLang,

I came to this school in the summer of 2024, carrying a doctorate in curriculum and instruction and a long career of teaching English to Taiwanese children. I had walked through bigger campuses, more “famous” campuses, more well-resourced campuses. None of them moved me the way the road into KangLang Village did the first time I drove it.

You will not find KangLang on a tourist map. You will, however, find it on a map that matters more — the map of children's daily lives. Two hundred or so of them, walking through our gate each morning, deserving every bilingual lesson, every classroom-sized adventure, every teacher who knows them by name.

I did not come here to make a small school bigger. I came here to make sure a small school stays whole. 我不是來把一所小學弄大的。我是來確保一所小學依然完整。

What does “whole” mean for KangLang?

It means the third-grader who learns about plants in two languages, naming a leaf as leaf and as 葉子 in the same breath. It means the fourth-grader's group activity carrying English phrases that they did not have to be drilled to remember. It means the sixth-grader doing fractions while listening to a teacher say numerator twice — once in each language — and not flinching at either.

It also means the school refusing to forget that the kanglang trees are still here. The brooms are still here. The grandmothers in the temple are still here. A bilingual classroom that has nothing to say about its own village is only half of what bilingual is supposed to mean.

I am an English teacher first. I will probably never stop being one. I came to KangLang because this is where the work matters — not because the work here is easy or famous, but because village children, given the same English-rich classroom that city children take for granted, become extraordinary by every measure that I have ever cared to measure.

Please walk our hallways. Please ask our teachers questions. Please tell us when we get it wrong and when we get it right. The principal's door is open in two languages.

各位家長,各位槺榔的朋友們:

2024 年夏天我來到這所學校,帶著一個課程與教學的博士學位,與一段不算短的「教台灣孩子英語」的職涯。我走進過更大的、更「有名」的、資源更多的校園,但沒有一個地方,像我第一次開車進槺榔里那條路時的感受那樣,把我的腳步定住。

你不會在觀光地圖上找到槺榔,但你會在一個比較重要的地圖上看到她——孩子們日常生活的地圖。每天早上走進校門的兩百多個孩子,每個都值得每一節雙語課、每一段教室大小的冒險、每一位記得他名字的老師。

「完整」這兩個字,對槺榔來說是什麼意思?

是那個用兩種語言上自然課的三年級孩子,能在一口氣裡把一片葉子說成 leaf,也說成「葉子」。是那個四年級孩子的綜合課,自然帶著沒被強迫記憶的英語片段。是那個六年級孩子算分數時,聽老師說 numerator 與「分子」兩遍,兩種語言都不退縮。

它也意味著這所學校還沒有忘記——槺榔樹還在這裡、掃帚還在這裡、廟口的阿嬤還在這裡。 一間說不出自己村落故事的雙語教室,只走完了「雙語」一半的路。

我首先是一個英語老師,可能一輩子都不會停止當英語老師。我來到槺榔是因為這裡的工作有意義——不是因為這裡的工作輕鬆或耀眼,而是因為村庄的孩子,只要給他們城裡孩子視為理所當然的那種「英語豐厚的教室」,就會在我所有曾經在乎過的指標上發光發熱。

請走進我們的走廊。請向我們的老師問問題。請在我們做錯的時候告訴我們,在我們做對的時候也告訴我們。校長室的門,是用兩種語言開著的。

Keep Middle-Tier Bilingual Honest 把「中階雙語」做實,不做花的

Six bilingual periods a week, spread across science, integrated activities, and math, taught by teachers who actually speak the languages they teach in. Not a banner. A timetable.

每週六節雙語課,分佈在自然、綜合、數學三科,由真的有兩種語言能力的老師授課。不是 banner,是課表。

Make Walking Qingshui Bilingual 把「行腳清水」做成雙語版

Take our signature outdoor curriculum and weave English phrasing into every station — the temple, the broom-makers, the market, the coast. A child who can name their own village in two languages owns it twice.

把我們招牌的戶外特色課程,每一站織進英語句子——廟宇、做掃帚的家、市場、海邊。能用兩種語言講起自家庄頭的孩子,那個地方便兩次是他的。

Keep the Door Open 把門開著

To other Qingshui schools. To Taichung's bilingual community. To English-speaking teachers, exchange students, and friends from abroad. A village school does not stop being a village just because it speaks two languages — but it can stop being small in a different way.

向清水其他學校、向台中的雙語社群、向外籍老師、交換學生、海外的朋友把門開著。一所村校不會因為說兩種語言就停止當村校——但她可以在另一種意義上,停止被當成「小」。
